Where to Place QR Codes at a Card-Show Booth
Use one primary eye-level sign and smaller task-specific codes near natural pause points. Keep codes flat, well lit, unobstructed, branded, and paired with a short fallback URL.
Start with the booth journey, not the sign
Map what a visitor does from the aisle to checkout. Typical pause points include:
- stopping at the front edge to understand what the booth sells;
- browsing a display case or product wall;
- asking about a card, set, player, or price;
- waiting while staff retrieves inventory or completes a trade; and
- paying, collecting a receipt, or packing a purchase.
Place a code only where it supports the next step at that moment. A giant code behind the cash box may be technically visible but useless if people notice it only while a line is moving. A small sticker under glass may be close to the product but impossible to scan through glare.
Use a three-zone placement plan
Zone 1: Aisle orientation
Put one primary sign high enough to be seen when people are standing in front of the table. Its job is to explain the booth-level offer, not every program you run.

The code should be large enough to scan from the expected viewing distance. Print a test, place it in the actual stand, and scan from the aisle with multiple phones.
Zone 2: Browsing and conversation
Use a smaller sign near the display area where collectors pause. This code can support a more specific action, such as saving the storefront, opening a collection, or requesting a checklist. Keep it outside the space where hands, sleeves, slabs, and shopping bags will cover it.
Zone 3: Checkout and departure
Place a final reminder near the receipt, packaging, or exit side of the booth. It can invite a buyer to save their membership pass, see order updates, or hear about the next show. Do not make staff turn the payment device around to reveal the only code.
Three zones do not require three different offers. Repeating one clear destination can be more effective than introducing new choices at every surface.
Protect the code's scan area
GS1 verification guidance emphasizes the quiet zone around a two-dimensional code. Do not crowd the modules with text, borders, artwork, tape, or a stand edge. Preserve the clear margin generated with the code.
Use these production rules:
- dark code on a light, solid background;
- matte stock or a low-glare sleeve;
- no folds, curves, or textured surfaces;
- no transparent background over a photo;
- no tape across the modules;
- no resizing that blurs the square edges;
- enough print resolution for the final physical size; and
- a backup copy stored at the booth.
Branding can sit beside the code. Do not replace functional contrast or clear space with a decorative pattern that has not been tested.
Make the destination trustworthy
The FTC warns that QR codes can hide spoofed or harmful destinations. Help collectors verify yours:
- print the seller name next to the code;
- include a short recognizable HTTPS URL;
- use the seller's domain or ClubPull subdomain;
- explain exactly what opens;
- avoid public URL shorteners with an unfamiliar host; and
- inspect every printed sign for tampering during the show.
If the code is event-specific, the visible domain can stay consistent while the path or campaign parameters carry attribution. Never place an email address or other personal information in those parameters.
Write a sign that works without staff narration
Use four layers:
- Benefit headline: "Get vintage want-list alerts."
- Expectation: "Choose players or sets after you scan."
- Action: QR code and "Scan with your camera."
- Trust: seller name and short domain.
Keep consent language on the form, where the collector can read it beside the fields and submit button. The sign can say "Marketing updates are optional" when that distinction matters.

Design for a phone used with one hand
After the scan, the destination needs readable text, labeled fields, large controls, clear focus, and useful error messages. W3C WCAG 2.2 guidance sets a minimum target size or sufficient spacing for pointer controls. A form may technically load on a phone and still be miserable in a crowded aisle.
Ask only for fields needed to fulfill the offer. Put the primary submit button within the normal reading flow. Do not open a second tiny modal before showing the promised content.
Test under real booth conditions
Do not approve a sign by scanning a PDF on a laptop. Print the final size and test:
- from the expected distance;
- under bright overhead lights;
- through the intended sleeve or stand;
- at a slight side angle;
- with current iPhone and Android cameras;
- on cellular data;
- with a cracked or older phone when available;
- while another person stands at the table; and
- after the code has been packed and unpacked.
Complete the form and open the resulting email. A successful camera recognition is only the first boundary.

Diagnose the funnel by placement
Record views or visits, completed forms, explicit opt-ins, and returning buyers by placement code. Interpret the pattern:
- No visits: sign is hidden, unclear, damaged, or not mentioned.
- Visits without completion: destination is slow, confusing, or asks too much.
- Completions without engagement: offer attracts low-intent visitors or delivery fails.
- One placement dominates: simplify the booth around the position people already use.
- Checkout performs but aisle does not: the offer may rely on buyer trust and need a different message for browsers.
Do not compare tiny samples as if they are conclusive. Use observations across multiple shows before making a permanent booth change.
